North Dakota<\/a>\u00a0the 39th<\/sup> state and South Dakota<\/a>\u00a0the 40th <\/sup>state became part of the Union on November 2, 1889. Because both wanted to be the first state admitted, President Benjamin Harrison shuffled both statehood papers and signed then without knowing which one was first. However, because North Dakota is alphabetically before South Dakota, its proclamation was published first.<\/p>\n
